obama is opening leads in states that mitt romney can least afford to lose. have a look at our new poll today. the president now has a 10-point lead in the swing state of ohio, 53% to 43. in florida, another key swing state, mr. obama's lead is nine points, 53% to 44. and the president leads by 12 point in pennsylvania, 54 to 42. this quinnipiac university/cbs news/"new york times" polls has a margin of roar of three points so the leads are significant. our cbs news election analysis team is moving ohio from a toss- up to leaning toward mr. obama. with that, we estimate 255 electoral votes are solidly in the obama camp or leaning that way. for governor romney the number is 206 with 270 needed to win. the president would have to pick up just 15 in the remaining toss-up state that you see on this map in gray. if the president wins ohio, governor romney would have to nearly sweep those toss-up states in order to win the white house. so no surprise that we find both candidates in ohio today. our campaign 2012 team is on their trail and we're going to start tonight with nancy cordes. nancy.

the campaign strategy? >> first i think you have to point out in almost every single poll obama is under 50% or at which is warning to the president. he'll pick up very few undecided votes. the ads were information for your own party. the debates are going to start to pay attention and that happens right when early voting starts. so i would suggest that these debates are critical for mitt romney. and, frankly, i think that -- you know, you can say he's not connecting with the middle class. well, obama you could make the argument, hurt the middle class, and think that's a big part of what the debates are going to be about. >> what do you think they're going to be about, chris, and how important are they? >> they're incredibly important. because romney has been so beaten up, they're going to take another look at him. if he does well in his debates, he will energize his campaign. i think you're going to have the campaign being about two things. the defendant is going to have to defend his record and there's going to have to be a very strong case for why his policies are wrong for the country.

a major shift in momentum in the race for president. new polls show president obama now 10 points up on mitt romney in ohio which is a key battle ground state. abc news has moved ohio out of the toss up column and into the obama column. that gives the president 255 likely electoral college votes to 206 for romney. 270 are needed to win. both campaigned in the buckeye state today. abc news reporter david muir asked about the poll numbers tonight. >> i'm curious what you would say to some of your donors who might be concerned that this could be slipping away. >> i am pleased with some polls and less so with other polls. but frankly at this early stage the polls go up and the polls go down. >> the president seized on the momentum and linking him to the comments that they are victims who depend on government. >> i don't believe we can get very far with leaders who write off half of the nation as victims and don't take responsibility for their own lives. as i travel around ohio and look out on this crowd i don't see a lot of victims. i see hard work in ohio ans. that's what i see. >> hist

that obama won last time. romney will win that. everyone is surprised that all of these polls are pretty much saying obama is in command of the lead. chuck talked about they lost august. one reading is that they lost the summer, the romney campaign. if you look at obama did, they did, at the start of this race was in may. that's when they started going out with tough ads and framing romney as someone who wasn't in touch with the middle class and the tax issue, him releasing his tax returns. he was always on the defensive and now he has a lot of ground to make up. gwen: is there an argument to be made that there is a policy shift going on in america's mind as well, not just a good speech or a good piece of positioning, but actually people are looking at their choices differently now? >> there are ways to think of this, not just through polling data but economic data and there is a surge of optimism. small business confidence is up. some financial market participant indexes are up. this would suggest that people are starting to feel better about this recovery. a lot of interesting questions as
